In this article, I provide a step-by-step procedure to help you build your WordPress blog the right way using

WordPress powers 30% of all websites and for a good reason, it is very efficient and flexible, and it gives full control over your website and your data without limitations.

It means if you want to monetize your blog at a later time you will be able to do it in multiple ways.

If you want to change to another hosting provider you will be able to do it. And if you want that cool feature that you see in other blogs, you will be able to easily get it using a one-click install plugin!

This chapter also covers other assets that you will have to get like your social media accounts, your business card, and your professional email.

12. Build a Website & a Blog

Step-by-step guide to build your WordPress blog the right way using Don't miss these essential tips before starting your dream blog. #wordpressforbeginners #createablogwordpress #createablogtips #howtocreateablog #howtousewordpress #buildablogtips #howtobuildablog, #wordpresswebsiteforbeginners #createablogstepbystep

A website has a huge advantage over social media pages! You own it and have full control over it.

As opposed to your social media accounts where the policies can change anytime, your website is your property.

You own the asset (the website content) and the traffic, and you can monetize it the way you want.

The good news is, nowadays, building a website and a blog has never been easier.

Even if you don’t know anything about building a website, you can easily learn and build your website all by yourself.

a) How to Choose a Domain Name

As mentioned in chapter 1 tip #10, you need to secure a domain name for your website.

Your domain name is what composes the URL address of your website (e.g.

In the case of Personal Branding, your domain name will ideally be the same as your brand name. Meaning if you choose to brand yourself under your name, try to buy

Similarly, if you brand yourself under a different name, try to buy

In the best case scenario, you buy the .com domain name corresponding exactly to your name and/or brand name (if different).

However, many names are already taken, so you might have to be creative, especially if you have a common name. In this case, you can choose from different extensions.

The most popular are .ca, .co, .net, .io, .ai, .me, .us, but there are hundreds of others to choose from. You can also add a prefix or suffix to your name. For example, or

  • Descriptive
  • Easy to remember
  • .com when available
  • Easy to spell
  • Made of correctly spelled words. Don’t use awkward spelling.
  • Without hyphens or numbers
  • Brandable (when possible) – this means you will be able to trademark your name.

Most hosting plans come with a free domain included. You can simply register your domain at the time of buying your hosting service.

However, I recommend buying your domain from an ICANN-accredited registrar like This way, you manage all your domains from one place.

In addition, if you need to change your hosting provider in the future, you don’t need to process any domain transfer. You just redirect your domain DNS to your new hosting server in no time.

b) How to Subscribe with a Hosting Provider.

Web Hosting

A hosting provider is a company that will host your website on a secure server so that it can be accessed securely from anywhere in the world through the Internet.

I’ve tried multiple hosting providers and I recommend Siteground and the GrowBig plan because Siteground offers servers well-optimized for WordPress.

For an equivalent price point, your Siteground hosted site will be faster, which is very important because speed positively affects SEO.

Does it mean it is the cheapest? No.

There are plenty of hosting providers out there and, although very affordable, Siteground is not the cheapest.

However, it is worth every penny. It is user-friendly, the support is excellent and the GrowBig plan comes with a WordPress Special Caching that increases the speed of your site, which again, is very important for search engine optimization (SEO), but also for audience loyalty and audience retention.

They also provide a one-click install script to install WordPress very easily.

Siteground Wordpress Hosting

In addition, Siteground offers a free SSL certificate that can easily be installed from CPanel. Another element considered by Google in your ranking! Secured HTTPS sites rank better in search engines.

Step #2: Click on Get Wildcard

Once you have your WordPress and Theme installed (next points), you will be able to use the WordPress plugin Really Simple SSL to enable your SSL on your blog.

Within 2 minutes, you will have a secure blog which will have an instant positive impact on your SEO ranking!

Once you have enough traffic to justify an upgrade to the GoGeek plan, you will also get access to the Staging tool to create and manage development copies of your websites.

If you don’t want to make experiments on your live site that your visitors will see or don’t want to break it while developing a new feature, it’s a useful tool to use.

Once again, Siteground is not the only option, but it is certainly among the best for blog hosting.

d) How to Choose the Right WordPress Theme

Are you about to choose your Wordpress theme for your new blog? Don't purchase your theme before reading these essential tips! #wordpressthemeblog #wordpressthemebusiness #wordpressthemebest #wordpressthemetips #choosingwordpresstheme #wordpressthemesdesign

Wordpress themes are predesigned templates offering various options of layouts, styling, menus, headers, and add-ons.

Themes are great because they are cheap and yet, very robust and high-quality thanks to a large number of people who were there first to report the bugs!

Instead of paying a web developers thousands of dollars to develop a custom theme full of bugs, you can buy a robust theme for just under 100$ and easily customize it yourself.

IMPORTANT TIP: Not all themes are of equal quality!

Choose a best seller theme, because you want to make sure the theme has been well-tested by a lot of users and most importantly, you want to make sure the developers will support the theme with regular updates for many years to come.

You have no idea the number of developers that build an awesome looking theme (full of bugs), cash in and then, close their business and disappear. Then you are stuck with a buggy theme that is not supported anymore.

Keep in mind that all bestseller themes are highly and easily customizable, so you can modify it the way you want and give it the look that best represents you.

The demos are there to showcase the theme, but you don’t have to keep the same colors, elements, pages, etc. You can change basically all the elements to suit your needs.

One of the most popular themes in the world is the DIVI theme from Elegant Themes.

Divi is powered by the Divi Builder, a fast and intuitive front-end editor with a lot of editing features and elements. It is definitely one good option you may consider.

How to choose a wordpress theme - DIVI Theme

Check out this great tutorial on how to build a website from the ground up using WordPress, the DIVI theme and Siteground as your hosting provider.

This video is by Ferdy Korpershoek and is very complete and easy to understand.

Another great place to get a low-cost theme is

The #1 selling theme on Theme Forest is Avada with over 435K sales on Theme Forest.

I used it on some projects and it is very good and easy to use. I definitely recommend it.

It comes with clear documentation to help you installing and setting up the theme and with an effective one-click update feature.

If you don’t feel confident installing the theme yourself, you can pay an extra on Themeforest to get it installed for you.

Once your theme is installed, go through the backend menu and set it up with your favorite layout, header, footer, colors etc.

e) How to Design your site

Now the fun begins!

Use the work you have done in CHAPTER 1: CREATING YOUR BRAND IDENTITY! and integrate it into your website.

Use your brand colors, your logo, your brand name, your short description, your taglines, and your photo, and use your design graphic skills to build an attractive home page.

Then, use your stories to make an awesome about me page.

Finally, quickly set up a contact me and a blog page and Boom!

You have a website up and running.

The blog is empty for now, but we will see In CHAPTER 3: CREATING ENGAGING CONTENT – BLOG POSTS!, how to create engaging content for your blog and media pages.

The same way you got inspired for designing your logo with existing influencers’ logos, do the same with their websites.

These guys optimized their sites for maximal conversions, so it is a good idea to inspire yourself from their experience.

Try to reproduce the main elements and blocks and customize them to your brand.

Get inspired by these sites, but again, don’t copy!

On the home page, make sure to write your name and your title. E.g. David Gaudreault, Entrepreneur, Maker, Online Marketer, and Personal Branding Passionate.

You can easily install plugins in WordPress from the plugin section. Use the Add New button, then use the search function to find the desired plugin and click install+activate.

Another interesting plugin that is very efficient to grow your favorite social media platform is Milotree.

It is a smart pop-up that you can install in 2 minutes and let your users subscribe to your page, profile or channel in one-click.

You can choose between Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube.

g) How to Configure the DNS of your domain to point to your Siteground server.

In order for your domain name to point to your server, you need to set up the DNS. You can find your Nameservers information in your Siteground account under My Account -> Information & Settings.

Siteground Nameserver Data

Then, fill in your Siteground hosting nameservers to the empty lines and click on the green checkmark to save the changes.

Within usually a few hours (can be longer), you will be able to access your website using your domain name.

13. Setup Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a piece of code that you place on your website. It collects data on your visitors and provides a tone of valuable insights to help you analyze your website traffic.

It is important to install your analytic tracking codes early and start collecting data.

You can create your Google Analytics account here.

14. Setup Facebook Pixel

Facebook pixel code is a piece of code that collects data on people who takes some kind of action on your website.

This data can be used to track conversions, optimize ads based on collected data, build targeted audiences for future ads, and remarket to qualified leads.

It is important to install your pixel codes early and start collecting data. This way, the day you will be ready to run advertising, you will be able to use this data to properly target your audience.

Keep in mind that Facebook AI needs a lot of data to provide precise targeting and profiling and it doesn’t happen overnight. So better install the code now.

You can find additional information about the Facebook Pixel here.

15. Setup Your Professional Email Address

Once you have a hosting package with Siteground, go to CPanel and set up your professional email.

Cpanel Email Setup Menu

Follow this guide.

Then, for more convenience, I recommend you set up your email in Outlooks or Gmail.

16. Design Your Social Media Pages

Now that you have designed your website, it shouldn’t be a big deal for you to design a header and select a profile picture for each of the Social Media platforms (See Chapter Tip#11 for more details on the selection of your platforms).

Stay loyal to your brand guidelines and message.

Use your logo, your colors, and the same descriptions and taglines you used on your website.

A user who visited your website should recognize your brand right away when visiting your social media pages.

David's Way Facebook Page

For your profile picture, use your logo or your professional picture.

For the header, use the right header sizes and position the elements properly to ensure a perfect disposition of the elements on all devices and screens.

Because the header specifications change regularly you should search on Google for the recommended size for your specific needs.

E.g. Google search for Header Size Facebook Business Page if you want to find the size in pixel of a Facebook Business Page Header.

The size is expressed as a width (in pixel) by a height (in pixel).

Google Search Keywords: Facebook Cover Image

It is very important to fill all fields of your profile including your description, contact information, website URL, etc. Once again use the same description, story, keywords, hashtags, and taglines as the one on your website.

Your brand and message will be stronger and more efficient if it is consistent across your platforms.

17. Get your Professional Business Card

With a personal brand comes a whole lot of opportunities online and offline, and you never know when you’re going to run into a lead or an opportunity.

For these spontaneous meeting, you need the good old business card.

Design it creatively and use your brand colors and your logo.

Your card must communicate two important messages (1) who you are and (2) what you do, and it must contain your contact information, which nowadays, includes your website URL and your social accounts in addition to your traditional contact information.

I recommend adding an intriguing call to action with a short URL on the back of your card.

Something like 10 Secrets to Boost your Standing with a Strong Personal Brand:, which leads to an opt-in page, a podcast, YouTube video, etc.

Anything that will raise curiosity and encourage an action or engagement.

Use your design skills to design your business card and get it printed by Vistaprint or Moo.
