4 steps to become a visionary

It’s simple in theory to learn how to become a visionary like Jeff Bezos, but yet very hard in practice! There are in reality four simple steps you need to master:

  1. Observes the trends,
  2. Identify opportunities
  3. Evaluate the odds that your envisioned opportunity turns out to happen
  4. Align your activities to better position yourself to seize the opportunity when it arises.

Let’s say you are Jeff Bezos at the beginning of the century, you have been managing a high-traffic e-commerce site for many years and you know the technical difficulties of scaling and growth of a high traffic website. You have developed core systems out of your own needs for scaling and growth and you perceive a trend that (1) many existing companies and future successful start-ups will sooner or later offer their products and services online and (2) many of these companies will face similar scale and growth challenges.

So you target the opportunity from that trend and align your activities to position yourself to catch the opportunity when it arises. You build a secure cloud services platform to help businesses scale and grow. It takes years to put the infrastructure in place, but you take lead and the day the opportunity arises you are at the right place, at the right moment, with the right solution already implemented and you are all set to meet a growing demand.

This is what I mean by Position of Strength. It’s not by chance, but because you know how to identify trends, target future opportunities, evaluate the odds, and put yourself in a position of strength. Jeff Bezos started Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud in 2006 and since then, according to TechCrunch, they have grown into the most successful cloud infrastructure company on the planet.

That’s what it is to be a visionary. You look at the trends, identify the opportunities you want to pursue, evaluate your chance of success and take calculated risks to achieve your ultimate objectives.

As an entrepreneur, being able to perceive trends years in advance will give you an edge over your competitors and ensures your durability. It is one thing to identify the first opportunity out of luck, but it is another to keep foreseeing opportunities for many years and stay ahead of elite CEOs and strategist working there asses off to take you down.
